Jeremy Fernandez
In a world where determination and grit define success, Jeremy Fernandez exemplifies what it means to rise above one's circumstances and forge a path of resilience and excellence. Hailing from Del Rio, Jeremy has carved out an impressive career and athletic journey.
Today, we explore Jeremy's multifaceted journey, delving into his military service, the challenges he has overcome, and the pivotal moments that have shaped his current pursuits. By examining the motivations and aspirations that drive Jeremy, even guiding his future, we uncover valuable insight for those seeking to follow a similar path of resolve and dedication. Reflecting on his upbringing, he shares,
“My name is Jeremy Fernandez and I'm from a west Texas border town called Del Rio. My professional title is Lead Digital Product Manager. I am responsible for leading the development and strategic management of digital products and services for an insurance and financial services company primarily serving the military community and their families. When I'm not working, I am an avid recreational athlete in various disciplines including CrossFit, competitive shooting, trail running, mountain biking, off-road triathlon, golf, and martial arts. I am also currently pursuing an MBA at Rice University, Jones Graduate School of Business.”
With a rich professional and athletic background, Jeremy's journey began with his service in the Air Force, where this foundational experience shaped his approach to handling challenges. Looking back on his time in the military, Jeremy reveals:
“I was in the Air Force from 2000 - 2009 and served as an Air Transportation troop that managed and processed inbound and outbound heavy airlift cargo and passengers. I was fortunate to be part of a Contingency Response Group, which are rapid response tactical unit capable of establishing strategic airlift operations anywhere in the world. Any major airfield established during OEF/OIF was first opened by a CRG and I'm quite proud of our contributions. CRGs are also capable of supporting any other type of military airlift operation and I was fortunate to travel the world in support of other non-combat missions.”
The path to success is often paved with obstacles. Jeremy's biggest challenge has profoundly shaped his approach to life and relationships, offering valuable lessons in resilience and personal growth. He explains the significant changes in his relationships and self-awareness brought about by this experience:
“Learning empathy was one of the biggest obstacles I’ve overcome. I didn’t grow up in a very positive or supportive environment and I needed to learn early on as a kid to be self-reliant and to have extremely high standards to truly trust someone. Having walls up and being guarded was the only way for me to keep my sanity or risk being pulled back down to a level I was trying to transcend from. That type of mentality doesn’t translate well to a positive long-term productive or meaningful approach to life. I failed numerous times over the years with many interpersonal and professional relationships by not being willing to open myself up and trust others.
That experience helped me become self-aware of my shortcomings and helped me accept that my actions do affect others. When you can accept the fact that your actions negatively, or at least not positively, affect others then you know where it is to begin working on improving yourself. It takes humility to understand where you are and how you wish to be and it takes a lot of hard and uncomfortable work to be better.”
A pivotal moment can ignite a lifelong passion. Jeremy recalls an event that profoundly influenced his current pursuits, shedding light on the importance of positive influences and mentorship. Reflecting on this defining chapter in his life, Jeremy shares,
“There was a moment that fueled my drive, probably somewhere around 2006 or 2007 when I just happened to be surrounded by positive and successful people. It was an opportunity for me to see a different way of living than what I was accustomed to. Going back to my early days, I didn't have positive role models to emulate and I couldn't open myself up to accepting a mentor, but this was the first time when truly positive and professional people were willing to treat me like equals. They helped me accept that I was capable of much more if I only tried.”
Looking ahead, Jeremy has clear goals for his future, balancing professional aspirations with personal growth and community involvement, aiming to inspire others through his journey. Looking to the horizon, Jeremy states:
“My goals for the next few years, first and foremost, are to finish my MBA. I’ve been applying what I’ve learned at my company so I hope to be able to contribute even more once I am finished and do some great things for our members. Outside of work, I want to devote more time to giving back and helping some amazing organizations I’ve been lucky to be involved in. I plan on training for another Tactical Games event that I hope to continue doing as well. Shooting and fitness go so well together.”
Respect is often a reflection of one's values. Jeremy shares who he respects and why, offering insights into the qualities that drive continuous improvement and inspire confidence. Articulating his admiration for growth, Jeremy remarks,
“I respect anyone willing to grow and be better. I believe people need to always be in a constant state of growth at all levels. Learning something new, taking on new challenges, and being willing to be challenged. These aren’t easy or comfortable to do and those willing to do so are the ones I will always have respect for.”
Jeremy Fernandez's journey is a testament to the power of self-reinvention, resilience, and the relentless pursuit of excellence. From his service in the Air Force and his role as a Lead Digital Product Manager to his diverse athletic pursuits and academic endeavors, Jeremy's story highlights the importance of empathy, personal growth, and the influence of positive role models. Just as the rugged landscapes of West Texas mold its residents, Jeremy's experiences have shaped him into a multifaceted individual committed to continuous improvement. Jeremy Fernandez exemplifies the enduring spirit of those who strive not just to succeed, but to grow and inspire others along the way. As Jeremy continues to pursue his MBA and aims to give back to his community, his journey prompts us to reflect on our own paths. How can we embrace growth and resilience in our lives, and who can we inspire along the way?

“I am a United States Air Force Veteran. After my enlistment ended I was honorably discharged and continued my service as a military spouse to my husband who is a retired USAF Master Sergeant, Simon Garcia. After his retirement, he found mountain biking and joined a veteran non-profit right at its inception in 2018 called The Dirt Therapy Project (TDTP). We are now both Texas Chapter Leads & ambassadors for the program and volunteer to take veterans of all skill levels out bike-riding or hiking in the San Antonio area. I also volunteer at another veteran non-profit called Rustic Ranch. We go out to the ranch to lend a hand whether it's moving dirt, clearing land, or working the booth at their fundraiser. I also work as an assistant at an Acupuncture clinic while I finish the Texas Medical Board process to obtain my own Acupuncture license.” - Sandy Garcia
